The Right Side of the Brain

I would like to share the resource that I have used to plan my lessons. The book is called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. It provides way to teach children and adults how to make realistic drawings. I have tried and really like the introductory activites of drawing without looking at the paper, drawing an image when it is upside down, and drawing the negative spaces. There are lots more ideas too. I would appreciate it if anyone else in the class has a good how-to book for other "arts" that could provide scaffolding lessons for me as a teacher and artist. Willow has shared with me another book about drawing; "Drawing with Children" by Mona Brookes.

I remember doing the same sort of lessons when I first began learning how to draw people's portraits (i.e. turning the paper upside down and drawing negative space). This method also helps you see how the drawing of the person's face matches the actual life in front of you. It creates a more realistic representation of shape (oddly enough) that you might have trouble seeing right-side up. So if the chin is slightly off-centre on a person's face, you will notice it better upside down than right side up... weird hey? lol!
I will have to take a look at this book you have! It sounds awesome. :)

This is not really a book but it is a useful place to go for recipes for art related stuff like glue, paint, dye, paper mache material and all the miscellaneous stuff that you sometimes need and wish you could find a recipe for. The link is

I was reading the newspaper this weekend and, in a round about way, found this website which might be an interesting resource for you to check out.

Thanks for sharing the great resource Leisbet. It looks great and I have made a note of it. I am sure the students in your class have a great time with all the art activities you plan!
